Alston is a small market town in Cumbria. The town itself lies between the River Nent and South Tyne. It is reputed to be the highest market town in the country at around 300m above sea level. The market cross is a focal point of the village and was originally built in 1863. A producers' fair is held periodically selling produce and crafts from the surrounding area.
