Excellent hotel ideally situated for shopping at the superb Merry Hill shopping complex.
Spent almost a full day at the Black Country Museum. Ride on a tram. Wandered around plenty to see, lots of guide's dressed in Victorian period. Went down a drift mine Scary. On the day we were there 3 coachloads of schoolchildren very well behaved were no trouble, enjoyed fish/chips cooked in beef dripping great. And the guides were excellent.
Good weekend in and around Dudley, good shops, cinema and plenty of attractions for adults and children.
Before checking in we had lunch at the Brewer's Wharf pub which was just across the canal from the hotel. Food was ok, typically what you would expect from pub grub, although the service was slow even though they were not too busy. More staff were needed to cut down the time taken to get drinks to the table and for our order to be taken. After checking in we went down to the Merry Hill shopping centre, which is 5 minutes from the hotel and much easier to walk to than drive, due to the fact that finding a parking space is difficult, especially at the weekend. The range of shops is good, and in my opinion challenges what Bluewater and similar places have to offer. The centre is generally clean and staff helpful and friendly. We wanted to eat Chinese on the Saturday night and found a nice looking restaurant by the canalside (the canalside has had a lot of money invested in it to create a row of pubs, clubs and restaurants), but were surprised to find it empty! Upon looking at the price list in the window I figured that the high prices maybe put people off. We didn't want to be the only ones in there so we walked back to a nearby Chinese restaurant that was packed with customers. Turns out it is an 'all you can eat buffet' place, which wasn't what we really wanted but was cheap at 25GBP... Read full review ]
I noticed that the shopping centre was very good with a good range of shops. My husband and I spent many happy hours in there and spent lots of money! Costa Coffee are due to open soon which will be a great improvement. However, I was very disappointed that there was no-where to find out details of local attractions as the information centre in the shopping arcade was closing down. Dudley Zoo had a wide range of animals including brown bears, kangaroos, rats and red squirrels. All the animals had spacious living quarters and looked well cared for.
