Visited the numerous charity shops in town and generally chilled out.
The object of this stay was to visit family in Ross. It was a very pleasant time all round, except for the wet weather.
We arrived at the hotel in a blizzard and watched it snow from the bar - not the worst afternoon of my life. Indeed, friendly staff, excellent service and well presented and tasty food made for a very pleasant stay indeed.
Following a short stay with friends in Wales I was looking for a hotel for a couple of nights as a base to explore Monmouthshire. Ross on Wye wasn't my first choice but it turned out well. Ross has some old buildings and streets but it's main attraction was its location. It's an easy drive north to Hereford and south into Monmouthshire. There are some good places of interest within an hours drive and the countryside is very attractive. The Royal Hotel is a very prominent older building on a hilltop overlooking open country. I was pleasantly surprised by the size and condition of my single room. The bed was very comfortable and the linen looked new. The bathroom was a good size and clean. The staff seemed to be mostly Australian students but they did a good job. The breakfast was well organised with a combination of buffet and ordered cooked meals. The mushroom omelette was particularly good! The restaurant is large, a bit dark and not cosy. But this is compensated for by the bar, which has good views into the countryside and where you can take meals. I stayed an extra night than I originally planned and would be happy to stay at the Royal again.
Lovely town lots to do however nobodys fault but my husband was ill so did not leave hotel
