We took the ferry from seahouses, and first sailed around a few of the islands, lots of sea birds and grey seals to see. We landed on one of the islands which was full of nesting birds particularly puffins, and guillemots - a photographers paradise. Our hotel, once we had found it (no help offered by person on reception) was quite small and overlooked the ground floor roof - not very appealing. The room itself was exceedingly hot, even though no radiators were on, and it was impossible to open the window more than a few inches; sleeping was quite uncomfortable. The bathroom looked stunning but the shower (which was over the bath) did not work properly (most of the holes were blocked so water just trickled out overhead); the bath was exceedingly slippery which made getting out of the shower treacherous. The grounds of the hotel were delightful and looked as though the fishing would be good if the lake was cleared of weed.

The hotel and surrounding were very pleasant but in need of investment - it was 'tired'. The twin room, located on the ground floor in the separate wing had recently been refurbished. It was small with only just enough room to manoeuvre around the beds. The mattresses were very comfortable but the bed frame was cheap flat pack with an mdf base that made the most dreadful noise if you moved. Not conducive to a good night's sleep. The shower room was good. Everything was clean. Breakfast was very good and those having full breakfast have the luxury of chosing from a good menu and being served at table. The evening meal was a disappointing ok and a little expensive but the Percy Arms was excellent and cheaper. All round, Otterburn Hall presented good value for money but the noisy beds did spoil things a little!.

Arrived late on the Friday evening, checked in easy, asked if we wanted to dine, but just needed drink and snack, bar meals excellent though fosters lager was poor! Other than that staff were really friendly and very good.

On arrival at the hotel we found that they only had reservations for one twin room although we had booked two rooms. This was quickly resolved and another room was added (luckily they weren't fully booked). The second room they gave us had a foul smell coming from the bathroom and the heating was stuck on so the room wasn't acceptable. After about half an hour they eventually moved the room to a double room as they didn't have any more twins available but at least that room didn't smell and wasn't like a sauna. We ate in the hotel and the food was ok, but not anything special. They ran out of shiraz wine after we had only had one bottle and we ended up having our third choice as the barman didn't think they had our second choice either. The hotel is in a beautiful setting and may be in need of some care and attention in places, but this is to be expected from buildings of that age.
