The Britannia Bournemouth Hotel was refurbished in June 06 & although there is still some work to be done, the hotel has a comfortable feel to it; in general, the staff were very pleasant and courteous, the room was surprisingly large (we were fortunate to have a sea view also!) & the buffet breakfast was more than adequate with a good variety of hot & cold choices. The highlight of Bournemouth is the seafront, its clifftop walks & the ability to walk as far as you want, taking in the sea air & admiring the scenery - from the view of the Isle of Wight Needles, to the point around Swanage. Bournemouth & area must be praised for the high standard of maintaining their buildings & gardens, all which blend in wonderfully. The abundance of trees makes it feel lush, even during the autumn season. Poole is a fantastic place to shop - an indoor mall with both regular & a few non-standard shops, the array of outdoor shops, the quay & Poole Pottery. Boscombe is another great little place with a mixture of shops & a pretty decent market with food & other goods. Wimborne Market is fairly large, with a good variety of food, clothing & assorted other goods. All in all, I would rate this part of Dorset as a great alternative to shopping in London, with the benefit of being by the sea in a lush green environment.
Our short break was to meet relatives in November, so not much in the way of trips out with wet and windy late autumn weather. However wind surfers on a beach area at Mudeford, near Christchurch, Dorset, put up a good show in the wind, and it was interesting to walk on the nearby marses with their masses of birds. A walk around part of Poole Harbour brought us to Sandbanks, which is an area full of expensive luxury homes, some of which have more unusual designs, which shows that houses in Britain do not all need to be the same.
This hotel was ideal for visiting the Lansdowne Campus of Bournemouth Uni, only being a short 5 min walk away. ideally situated for town centre and sea front. Had a great cheap meal in the Wetherspoons pub, shopping, cinemas all within a 10 min walk. Took a taxi from the train station which was only 3. hotel clean, comfortable and very warm with an excellent help yourself breakfast. We would have no hesitations on going back. car drivers may have difficulty parking at the hotel, but other space was offered at their sister hotel, 2 mins away.
Ideal location for Hotel left car in carpark and were able to walk either to shops or to sea front and museams.
Excellent situation, room was fab, on fourth floor with sea views.
