Double hernia room location at cotswold lodge on first night of 9 day tour of britain [with associated luggage]!! Third floor location at furthest point from car park.

The major intention for the stay was to see the musical 'Blond Bombshells of 1943' at the Playhouse; this occupied Saturday evening, along with a late meal in a lovely tapas restaurant. The show was low on story and plot, dialog sometimes puerile, but what excellent music! There's something about 40's swing that satisfies even me, an ardent progressive rock fan.. I also wished to visit Abingdon, where I used to lodge while working on the JET Project at Culham Lab site. Abingdon was shut (Sunday!) but we had a nice journey home through the Oxfordshire countryside, avoiding the A34.

Oxford is great for a short break - interesting alleyways, and fantastic history. The Cotswold Lodge Hotel was unfortunatley not so great - certainly not a 4* - an average 3* I'd say. The room was tired and the wallpaper marked, the bath panel was falling off, and some of the breakfast staff not overly helpful. Breakfast on the second day was disappointing - we came down at 9.45am (it closed at 10am) to find that most of the buffet table stuff (fruit/muffins etc) had gone, and were not replaced. The quality of the hotel generall was not 4*. However, this was made up by the wonderful meal we had acrosss throad at Gees - GO THERE! Otherwise - a very nice break

Whilst the location of Oxford is beautiful the hotel, the Cotswold Lodge, was poor. The rooms were grubby, the carpet on the staircases tattered, the coverlets stained, and the entrance hall was echoey and uninviting. In my room the loo was broken on my arrival, although they did endeavour to fix it within minutes of my reporting the fault. However, one would have thought that basic things like whether the loo worked would be checked before guest's arrival. Also one would hope that someone would apologise for this fault - noone did. This was all exceedingly disappointing from an expensive hotel which was supposed to have been recently refurbished.
