The hotel had very interesting stencilling on the walls downstairs, panelling and was attractively furnished in keeping with it's age from around 1870. We weren't particulary interested in the Restaurant's menu, not enough choice, so we ate in the bar. The homemade meat pie was very nice, unfortunately the fish was out of a packet (frozen). The bed was the hardest I have ever tried to sleep in, consequently I didn't sleep much at all, my husband slept ok though. There was a reasonable choice (buffet style) at breakfast. Overall it was a good hotel.
Three restful and interesting days seeing the sights of York - once we arrived we walked everywhere and was by far the best way of getting around. Walls offered easy way of finding places, good views and good exercise. Luckily the weather was perfect. The Elmbank Hotel - family have stayed there before and used it for wedding reception and family lunches.Very comfortable, interesting venue, easy to find and annexe not a problem. Car parking can be tricky but no more than most places near the centre. Very convenient for sight-seeing. Bar meals available as well as 4-course dinner. Only drawback - cask beer out of action and no alternative bottled.
The primary purpose of the visit was to see a friend who lives in York. Having my 95 year old mother with me restricted us to some extent, but Julie had booked a wheelchair and an entry time at the Jorvik centre. Both this and the city itself were easy to negotiate in this way. Tea in the tea rooms and the evening meal were very good. On Saturday we drove over the moors via Castle Howard, Sheriff Hutton, Nunnington Hall and Hutton-le-hole to Whitby where we had a pleasant tea. We returned via Pickering and Malton and had a home-cooked meal in the evening.
Came to York to visit family and had a great stay. hotel was very central and close to friends and family and it also proved to be good value and comfortable. shopping in York is excellent with many designer and major shops. great pubs and restaurants as well. Overall i would recommend the hotel as it is close to racecourse and town centre. Interesting decor.
Arrived by car and parked at the Hotel.Only got back in the car when it was time to return home. Situated on the Mount just next to the Racecourse and an easy walk to Micklegate (and the main city walls) which we used as a shortcut to atractions. walked. shopped, wined and dined, visited the theatre, had interesting full days, relaxing evenings and all in 3 days.
