We had a great weekend and did as much as we could fit in. Hotel was clean and just a ten minute walk from the centre. Use the Pullman tour bus its cheaper and the drivers are very helpful.
Very good weekend break
You can pack in alot of the main sights in 2 full days and I certainly did that. I walked everywhere as my Hotel was 10-15 minutes into the City and so very convenient. Heworth Court Hotel was very good in everyway and I would certainly go back there. The Lamplight Restaurant was so good that I ate there every evening. A drink in the bar to wind down after a busy day walking around specials and around half an hour later, your meal is ready and you are shown into the restaurant. What could be nicer? The staff are helpful and I met some fellow travellers and compared notes with them in the bar. All in all, a very good and varied short break. Highly recommended. What did I enjoy the most? A 2 hour guided tour of The Minster with a very knowledgeable volunteer guide. So much history and those stained glass windows!
We booked the weekend as we were going to a concert at the Grand Opera House on the Friday night. We visited some of the major attractions over the weekend - the Railway Museum - several hours needed, Jorvic and the Treasurer's House (we're NT members) with its ghost tales, a visit to the Minster and an interesting and enjoyable river trip. We can recommend the Blue Bicycle restaurant in Fossgate for a special meal but you will need to book. The Heworth Court Hotel is a comfortable friendly place to stay with an excellent breakfast. It is about 15 mins walk into the city centre, so we didn't use the car at all over the weekend. The hotel had its own private car park so we were quite happy leaving the car there. Had the weather been a bit warmer the courtyard would have been very pleasant to sit in.
As the hotel was only 10 mins walk away we walked to the town. Caught the tour bus for £9 for 24hrs which dropped us off and picked us up at any stop we wished within the tour route. Visited York Minster (a must see) then on to the Jorvik Viking Centre, climbed back on the bus the next day and visited the York Castle Museum, I must admit its the best museum I have visited and I've visited a lot in my time. York town is a great place to visit and we had a wonderful time. Heworth Court Hotel served some really nice dishes at respectable prices and the bar prices were good too.
